Private and Semi Private Lessons Overview
Private Lessons are available as a supplement to our group swim program. We recommend all students participate in the group Learn to Swim program first when possible. The private swim lesson program is designed to help students who are having difficulty with specific skills in a group lesson setting or they need a little more attention to move past a challenging skill. It is not meant to be the primary way that children learn to swim, while convenient for many families in timing, the sport of swimming is best taught in a group setting where children are able to interact and encourage each other. Children under 3.5 years of age are not eligible for private swim lessons. Parents of children under this age should view the requirements and information for the Parent and Child class or Toddler Fin class program. We get many requests from children who have just turned 3 years old. The best course for these children is the Pre-Fin course as it utilizes a low ratio of student-to-teacher to introduce children to swimming without a parent. Children who have not taken any group lessons and are under the age of 4 years typically do not have the skills or stamina to benefit from a 30 minute private lesson.
How to apply to Year-Round Program:
Private lessons are offered year-round and are scheduled by request only. Please read all of the information and complete the request form: Arlington County DPR Private Swim Lesson Request Email form to email@example.com or fax 703-228-1825 or drop off (make sure to confirm receipt of fax by email or 703-228-1883).
New requests are received and placed into a queue. Typical wait times are from two weeks to a month but can vary by season and depending on staffing. Staffing of our group lesson program takes precedence and many of the instructors are part time and schedules can fluctuate based on other demands. If you do not hear from the private swim staff in over a month, it indicates your availability does not currently match up with the openings in the program. Requestor may contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to update availability or check status. We do our best to match your availability with the instructor and have to adhere to pool space limitations as well.
In giving your availability, please keep in mind the below time frames in which lessons are most available. Click here for information on the schedule at the APS pools. The more flexible your request is on location, instructor, days and times, the sooner we will be able to contact you with an offer.
Please include ALL information concerning your request on the request form. Make sure you include your household number. This is the number assigned to you by the WebTrac registration system. If you do not have an household account with us you can register for one online at registration.arlingtonva.us or by phone 703-228-4747 press 1 for English or 9 for Spanish.

Getting Started with your Lessons
Invoice can be paid at time of booking or online once billed. Invoice must be paid within 2 weeks of registration. Customer MUST bring receipt to the pool on the first lesson date and check-in with APS pool staff to receive an electronic “swipe card” which will be loaded with 4 or 8 lessons (no “swipe card” will be issued for a 1 time lesson, customer will show their receipt for entry only).
Please notify your instructor AND email@example.com of cancellations at least 24 hours in advance. Failure to do so may result in the loss of a lesson. We will make exceptions for illness/injury or approved emergencies if an attempt to contact instructor is made within 4 hours of lesson time. Please coordinate with your instructor on preferred method of contact for this type of cancellation. If you need to cancel on the same day of you lesson, and cannot directly contact your instructor, please call the pool, so the instructor can be notified.
Participants may only make-up 1 lesson for personal reasons (vacation, illness or other) within a 4 pack, or 2 lessons within an 8 pack. Missing more than 1 out of 4 or 2 out of 8 is not recommended. At the time a participant has missed more than that we will consider offering your space to a client who is waiting to be scheduled. Please note these policies are in place to promote consistency for the instructor and student.
Customers retain the first right of refusal in maintaining their lesson place. Please notify your instructor AND firstname.lastname@example.org of your intent to renew at least one week in advance of your first lesson in a new set. Renewal requests should be in the format of:
- Student’s full name
- Household Number
- Lesson time
- Number of lesson/ package you are requesting
- Start/continuation date.
(Continuation date must be within one week of your completion date, otherwise, you will need to resubmit a request form)
**If there are dates you will need to miss, vacation, recitals, etc., include them as well. As long as your instructor’s availability has not changed, we will process this request by Friday the week before your lessons are to begin.
Is there anything open now?
We offer some private lessons through the Enjoy Arlington catalogue. Current private lessons can be found online at http://registration.arlingtonva.us then search by type “Aquatics – Private Lessons”. We currently do not offer any youth lessons this way. Theses lessons are available for registration on a quarterly basis. These are limited to specific times and days that fit within our program. When you register for these classes you should plan to attend all of them as they are not eligible for reschedule or cancellation due to personal reasons. The classes follow the Enjoy Arlington class refund policy and not the cancellation policy of the year round program described below.
If nothing is available now you should follow the directions above to apply to the year-round program.
Reminder that Public swim lesson programs are administered by Arlington County DPR and held at the Arlington Public School (APS) pools. You can view more information about public swim times and pool management issues at their website: www.apsva.us/aquatics
